Timeworn Treasures for Serving and Storage

This week’s feature covers a wide array of styles and purposes. From the minimalist appeal of sleek lacquered Japanese serving trays to the busily attractive golden print on a chintz paper mache vanity or tea-tray also from Japan these homely items come in a variety to please all tastes. Tole painted flowers on one tin and the crackle finish on another elegant gold trimmed floral container are evocative of the Victorian era. A country print and fruit vignettes on a tea tin invite you to include it on a farmhouse shelf. The spare lines of a gold trimmed glass tray with dark wooden handles come right out of a mid-century magazine display.

A vintage seller can specialize—and many do—finding a niche that they can connect with and love. Or, like me, you can glory in the diversity and variety of home-making and decorating through time, loving the history and the enduring beauty of these objects from the past. I have said it before—I am a Magpie—drawn to the intrinsic beauty of design and utility (as well as to all things Shiny  🙂 ) ! For me it is the joy of the hunt, and the thrill of discovery. I am gratified to have an instinct that separates the treasure from the trash (usually… my radar is not 100%) and I love playing vintage detective. I did not realize how much until it became part of my daily routine. Though in my current home, my decorating is trending toward a mid-century/industrial mash-up with some boho whimsy thrown in for good measure, I can’t really say I have a style. I have always been an eclectic, and I have lived long enough at this point to have embraced numerous styles and trends.

I am, like any vintage seller worth their salt in this milieu, a trend watcher. I stay abreast of design and style that are popular, try to note which are fads and soon to fade from more concrete trends, those that will dictate how people purchase and what they will use for a longer time. I am happy to live in such a diverse and eclectic time. It allows me to gather up all sorts of lovelies and offer them to you in our O Deer Mercantile Etsy Shop. Here’s this week’s featured new items—
